It’s a somewhat contentious subject, making the bed every morning, but could it be truly beneficial? Should it be part of a daily self-care routine? Is it really life changing?
Making the bed is a chore that few, if any, people really enjoy. And what’s the point? We’re just going to mess it up again that night, right?
So, why then is it such a big part of many folks’ routines? Allow us to delve into the magic of making one’s bed.
Time and time again, we’re told that mess can have a negative impact on our lives. Clutter, we’re told negatively impacts our energy and increases stress levels. However, making the bed often falls by the wayside – there are almost always bigger messes to tend do.
But maybe it’s less about cleaning up mess and more about doing things that make us feel accomplished.
It’s incredible what good habits can do for your life – and how a properly made bed can make you feel.
It seems pretty minimal in the grand scheme of things, but sometimes the small things matter most. That’s why this little tweak to your daily routine might just be completely transformative.
While some folks will tell you it takes 3 weeks – or 21 days – to build new habits, it varies widely. It can take as little as 18 days, or it could take over 250 days. Consistency is, of course, the key.
You might not realize it yet, but sometimes changing simple habits can have a major impact. It’s like when you quit a bad habit and suddenly realize how lousy it made you feel in the past.
You really might be surprised how pleased you’ll be with yourself when you see a properly made bed. For some, this simple thing can significantly change how you feel when it comes to your mood and energy levels.
Often, we subconsciously associate mess around us with the state of our own lives. If you’re thinking your life is a mess or you’re lacking control, perhaps it’s not you, it’s the clutter.
Making your bed can lead to other, more tidy habits – like keeping your room itself clean and organized. Once everything’s in order, you’re a lot more likely to feel like you’ve got it together. These small victories are empowering and often lead to even more great habits.
A properly made bed can also make you feel more relaxed. Instead of your room being a place you crash at the end of the day, it becomes a place of comfort and peace. This, in turn, can even help you get better sleep. And the National Sleep Foundation agrees.
A survey conducted by the NSF of 1,500 participants actually found something pretty intriguing about people who made their beds.
“Respondents who say they make their bed every day are 19 percent more likely to say they get a good night’s sleep every night than those who don’t,” the report said.
Yep, it could be that easy to make an improvement in your sleep quality.
