What Not to Eat

Sugar, a.k.a., kryptonite for ADHD should be avoided. Candy and sweets are not the only culprits though. Avoid fruit drinks and fruity cocktails that are not made of 100% fruit juice. Read ingredient labels carefully in any prepackaged foods and stay away from foods containing sugar or using any of the ‘code words’ for sugar which include high-fructose corn sweetener, dextrin, dehydrated cane juice, dextrose, maltodextrin, sucrose, molasses and malt syrup.

Other ingredients to avoid which have been linked to increased symptoms include artificial dyes and preservatives, as well as, gluten, wheat, corn and soy. Now this doesn’t mean you can’t have any foods containing these items but paying attention and avoiding or decreasing your intake of these ingredients as much as possible can help manage your symptoms.

What to Eat

Lean beef, fish, pork, poultry, eggs, beans, nuts and low-fat dairy products are all rich in protein. Protein-rich foods make chemicals released by the brain cells called neurotransmitters which allow the brain cells to communicate with one another more effectively. Protein can reduce hyperactivity as well as they prevent surges in blood sugar. They also contain zinc, iron and magnesium which all contribute to positive brain activity that alleviates symptoms.

Foods rich in B-vitamins are shown to increase levels of dopamine which improve alertness. Oily fish, flaxseed oil and omega-3 fatty acids all include picamilon which improves blood flow to the brain, aiding in alertness and attention.

Ginkgo and ginseng herbs and supplements act as cognitive activators which help individuals with ADD and ADHD become less impulsive and distractible. These can be found in many herbal supplements and teas. Another herbal supplement that is known for improving alertness, attention and accuracy is Rhodiola Rosea.
