Forget the things you think will make you happier such as success, money or fame. Everyone wants to be happy. Unfortunately, humans have a “happiness set point.” This means that 50% of our happiness is not within our control, but the great news is, the other 50% is completely up to you!
Although it varies from person to person, in general, 40% of your happiness is controlled by your brain. The happiness from your brain is a result of your thoughts, actions and behaviors. It was surprising to me that only 10% of happiness is determined by our circumstances. According to science, we get use to our circumstances over time, so they don’t play as big of role as we might think. The remaining 50% that is not in your control is determined by your genetics.
That 40% that comes from your thoughts, actions and behaviors is completely within your control. You can increase your happiness by nurturing positive relationships, having new experiences, helping others and being grateful for what you have. Pay attention to sights, sounds and smells and the little details of each experience you have. By savoring your experiences, it will make you happier and more grateful while also reducing guilt, depression and your levels of stress.
The happiest countries in the world by ranking are Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, Netherlands and Sweden. The least happy countries are Rwanda, Burundi, Central African Republic, Benin and Togo. So where does the United States fall? Number 17. So what is the difference? There is a correlation to happiness by country including GDP per capita, freedom to make life choices, generosity and longevity.
No matter where you live though – as we’ve just covered, ½ of your individual happiness is entirely up to you. The most important factor, according to researchers is social support. Having someone to count on in times of trouble and sharing your experiences others goes a long way to making you the happiest person you can be.
