The way your start your morning determines so much about the rest of your day. You can develop a healthy morning routine that’ll have you feeling calm, hopeful, and curious about what the day will bring.

It won’t be easy at first to unlearn some of those bad habits, but it will get easier the more you do it.

Use the Sun as Your Alarm Clock

Your body naturally wants to wake up as the sun rises and sleep after dark. Unfortunately, our modern lifestyle has wreaked havoc on our natural rhythms. The light from TVs, LED bulbs, and especially phone and tablet screens tricks your brain into thinking that it’s still daylight outside.

Put your screens away at least an hour before bed. And in the mornings, open your curtains to get some sunshine.

Head Outside

Speaking of sunshine, it’s a good idea to get a little fresh air and exercise first thing in the morning. Take a brief walk around the block as long as the weather cooperates. Listen to some upbeat music or just enjoy the sounds of nature. And don’t forget to bring a water bottle—staying hydrated is essential to feel your best.

Breakfast Makes Perfect

How often do you skip breakfast? If you’re like far too many of us, you forget to eat breakfast or grab a high-carb treat. Unfortunately, sugary cereals or pancakes will cause a spike in energy that’ll leave you feeling flat afterward.

Instead, take a few minutes to make a breakfast that’s high in protein alongside fruits or vegetables. Steel-cut oats with fresh berries and nuts is a delicious option, as is a veggie omelet. If you have a sweet tooth, try a smoothie made with Greek yogurt.

Whirlwind Chores

Some chores are easiest to tackle first thing. Make your bed, declutter anything that’s built up in your living spaces, take out the trash—whatever it is that you don’t want to do? That’s the thing you should take care of in the mornings. You’ll go through the rest of the day without the weight of those undone chores nagging at you. What a relief!

Get Inspired

Mornings are a wonderful time to create something or get inspired. Indulge in a hobby or learn something new in the first hour of your day. Pick up a challenging novel or non-fiction book, or read inspirational literature.

Even better, you could listen to a great educational podcast while you do your chores or exercise. Basically, you should give your brain a workout along with your body each morning.

Be Social

Retirement can be an isolating time. After decades in the workplace or wrangling a family, the quiet life can be a little bit overwhelming. Meet friends for breakfast every now and then, or look for a walking group instead of exercising solo. Get your household in on your healthy routine if you can—and if you can’t, find people who want to join you. Socializing is good for the body, mind, and soul.
