Turning Your Bedroom Into a Relaxing Retreat

From our friends at HeyPumpkin:

Even the most stylish homes usually have a dirty secret hiding behind a closed door: a boring bedroom.

No, you’re not alone. The majority of us just haven’t gotten around to the bedroom yet. Because our bedrooms are private spaces that no one usually sees but us, they tend to get neglected, to say the least.

Even though no one sees our bedrooms, it’s time to stop ignoring them! You deserve to have a relaxing retreat — an inviting, calming space to retreat after dealing with the stresses of the day.

Here are some easy ways to transform a boring bedroom into a relaxing retreat.

Boost Your Storage

Overflowing hampers and messy drawers that are too full to close are definitely not part of any relaxing retreat. Whether you want to admit it or not, clutter equals extra stress, and that’s the opposite feeling we’re going for here.

Again, our bedrooms are private spaces that no one else usually sees, so it’s easy to let things pile up. Don’t.

To combat the clutter, you need to ensure you have plenty of storage. Hey, we can’t all be minimalists, okay? Everything should have a place. Take advantage of nightstands with extra drawers, a decorative storage trunk at the foot of the bed, and integrate hidden storage anywhere you can. You can even find headboards with built-in shelves. If you’re lucky enough to have space under your bed, there are plenty of under-bed storage options out there in every price range.

Soothing Hues for Relaxing Vibes

Color can be one of the most powerful design tools at your disposal! The colors you choose can change the entire feel of your room.

Sure, you might love yellows, reds, and oranges, but these colors probably shouldn’t be used on your bedroom walls. While bright and cheery in other applications, they can be loud and kind of jarring for a relaxing bedroom sanctuary. Save the cheery hues for accents or a statement piece.

Instead, you should opt for something a little more soothing and peaceful. Soft blues, lavenders, greys, and greens will help create that serene calmness. Rich, lush hues like brown and amber will help add a cozy warmth.

Nature Rules

There’s something very relaxing about the natural world, so take advantage of it in your bedroom. Lush tropical leaves, natural wood, rattan, flowers and birds can reign supreme when it comes to soothing sanctuaries.

If you weren’t blessed with a green thumb, don’t worry — you can still get those plant vibes without actual live plants. Instead, look for bed linens, curtains, and even wall art featuring botanical prints and jungle leaves. Natural materials like bamboo, rattan, seagrass, and wood are also great ways to invite nature into your home.

And if you add a fake plant or two, I won’t judge!

Indulge With Luxurious Linens

I have been known to shop around for a good deal, but there is one thing you should definitely spend the extra cash on: luxurious bed linens.

It’s easy to think that cheap sheets serve the same purpose at a fraction of the cost… so why fork over all that extra money for the same thing, right? For just this once, I want you to ignore the bargain deals. Spring for the soft, luxurious linens and all the plush pillows your heart desires.

We’re going for that relaxing retreat feel, so you should turn your bedroom into a place you can’t wait to melt into at night. After all, they say you spend a third of your life in a bed, so you might as well do it in luxury.
