5 Healthy Snacks that Make a Brilliant Alternative to Potato Chips

Craving something crunchy? Put away those potato chips. Seriously, why do you even have those in your home?

beet chips

There are actually a plethora of far healthier snacks that are equally crunchy and still quite satisfying. Since they’re also better for you, you can stave off some of the guilt from that next Netflix-and-Snack session.

We’re talking about chips made from everything but potatoes or corn. And yes, there are more options than kale chips.

Fava Bean Snacks

Enlightened brings us some addictive munchables in the form of Bada Bean Bada Boom Roasted Bean Snacks. These delicious crisps are made from fava beans, so you’ll be getting plenty of fiber and protein. Plus, they come in both savory and sweet flavors.

Varieties include Sea Salt, Sriracha, Wasabi, Garlic and Onion, and Mesquite BBQ, as well as Cocoa Dusted and Sweet Cinnamon.

Chicken Chips

We’re not talking about chicken-flavored chips, we mean actual chips made from chicken. One serving has about seven grams of protein with just 10 carbs and only one gram of sugar. They’re also paleo-approved, grain-free, and cooked in coconut oil.

Wilde also makes these in several flavors, including Sea Salt & Vinegar, Barbeque, Jalapeño, Chicken & Waffles, and Buffalo. There’s even a Pink Himalayan Salt variety coming soon.

Lentil Snack Crisps

Perhaps you’ve seen Harvest Snaps offerings on display at your local healthy food store. They’ve got more than just Green Pea Snack Crisps though.

One of our favorites is their Tomato Basil Red Lentil Snack Crisps, though the Onion Thyme ones are good, too. Unlike potato chips, they’ve got less fat, lower calories, less sodium, and are all-around healthier.

 Egg White Chips

Yep, you read that right, there are chips made from egg whites. They’re called Quevos and they come in delicious flavors like Three Cheese, Cracked Black Pepper, Rancheros, and Sweet BBQ. In April, Quevos will be launching even more flavors via Kickstarter.

They’re low in calories, dairy and gluten free, and include healthy fats from chia seeds and avocado oil.

Veggie Chips

Prefer something plant-based (and vegan)? Check out Brad’s Cheddar Veggie Chips. They’re 100-percent organic, non-GMO, gluten-free, raw, and incredibly nutritious. Yes, they’re a bit pricey, but they’re much better for you than snacking on potato chips.

They don’t actually have cheese in them either, hence why they’re vegan. Instead, they combine red bell peppers with carrots, chickpea miso, turmeric, and cayenne.

The best part is that these aren’t empty calories, they’re actually a nutritious snack – if you can imagine that.

Other Healthy Options

These aren’t the only alternatives out there to potato chips by any means. There are also multiple brands and flavors of kale chips, many other lentil-based products, and even seaweed snacks. We’ve even seen chips made of beets – both on Amazon and in our local health food stores. Even Trader Joe’s is getting into the alternative snack craze.
