It’s that time of year when everyone starts to wonder what they can do differently next year. Most people start off strong, with the very best intentions… and then they start to lose motivation.
Here are some ways to make lasting, positive changes:
The first step is making a plan that you can actually accomplish. Start by writing down what your goal is and how you plan to accomplish it. Write down every detail. If your goal is to save more money, note how much you want to save or how much you are going to put away. If your goal is to lose weight, write down when and how long you’ll exercise during each day of the week.
Then – look at what you planned and ask yourself if you can stick to those tasks a majority of the time. If the answer is mostly, sometimes or probably, then write a new plan until the answer is definitely.
After you’ve defined realistic goals, break them down into smaller more manageable steps that can be measured. For instance, if your goal was to lose 50 pounds, set a weekly amount of pounds you should lose and goal date to lose them by.
Replacing unhealthy behaviors with healthier choices takes time. Focus on changing one thing at a time and give that your full attention. In the weight loss example, you likely need to exercise more and make healthier food choices. Start with one of those and work in the next behavior once you get in the groove of the first new habit.
Having someone else along on your journey will help keep you motivated and accountable. You can even consider joining a support group or gym, or take a class about a topic related to your goal. Others in the same group or class are likely to be there for the same reason.
Accept help from others that support you. If you are feeling overwhelmed or find yourself unable to meet your goals, consider seeking help from someone who specializes in the area you are struggling with. Seek a personal trainer or money management professional, even if it’s just for a one-time consultation to learn more about how to reach your goal.
